Abandon Jalopy

We've had the kind of interruption I need to our coachella post, that I am too excited to share with you and all goes hand and hand.  Something refreshing and new for all our ears and its roots come from a song that HE wrote that will bring you to a memory or a feeling you will love: No Rain by Blind Melon I was fortunate enough to interview, and hang out with the lead singer and his family for a photoshoot we did including his wife, Kim and darling daughter Frankie.  All shot by Jason Lee ParryHair and Makeup by Karina Moore and styled by Tara Nichols, all at a boutique Hotel in the Heart of Hollywood, The Redbury.

SO without further adieu please give a listen...then a round of applause  to The lovely Brad Smith, of Abandon Jalopy!

T:
Frankie is the name of your daughter, some might argue its a guys name how did you and your wife come up with the name for her:
BS:
Although It's short for Francesca , I've always liked "boy" names for girls! Jo and Charlie were runner's up!

T:
whats your favorite thing that Frankie does or the funniest thing she says
BS:
She looks at me when I'm trying to say something really serious to her, like "dont play in the street",, she crosses her eyes and makes a funny face completely deadpan with out a smile..   I'm helpless..

T:
everyone in the world knows and loves the song No Rain and knows the music video, how did you guys come up with the concept
BS:
It was pretty easy actually, The "bee girl" is on the cover of our record, we wanted to bring'er to life!

T:
Since you wrote No Rain, what does the song mean to you where is it from...everyone would agree it makes you feel something, brings you to a memory, really pulls on your heart strings when you listen to it
BS:
My favorite thing to say about that song is that I use to play it for change down on the Venice boardwalk. I would make enough money for parking and chicken teriyaki.   It was two years later that Shannon and Blind Melon made it a hit.

T:
speaking of bumble bees, have you ever been stung by one
BS:
Yes! well, honey bees anyway, I use to keep bees when i lived in Seattle.  I had a hive in my back yard. They are incredible creatures!  I gave it away to friends and neighbor's with the label "Brad's Honey", there
was a picture of Kim for the label.

T:
you have clown paint on in your All the Way video, do you have a thing for clowns?
BS:
I like the idea of makeup showing how you feel. For me it was a very Vaudevillian decision to be the sad clown.   Plus I love the dichotomy of a "Sad Clown".

T: beach boys, beatles or rolling stones
BS:
No Zeppelin???   ok...I will have to go with the Beatles,   but the Rolling Stones have a way better band name.

T:
who was your favorite band/singer growing up
BS:
Robert Plant, Neil Young

T:
did you listen to music when you lost your virginity if so, what song....
BS:
Brian Eno, music for airports.     Judge me if you must... haha

T:
what song could you listen to on repeat  (...mine is tied between bittersweet syphmony and no rain, jusssayin :-)
BS:
Bitter Sweet! What a great song!!  also, "It's a wonderful life " by sparkle horse.

T:
if you were on a deserted island what musician would you want with you.
BS:
Elvin Jones.

T:
if you had super powers what would it be and why.
BS:
To fly!! I got pretty close too, my brother and I learned how to fly hang gliders.  I got to 10,000 feet a few times. I actually flew with condors.   Then Frankie was born and I gave it up!!

T:
PBR, miller highlife or jameson on the rocks
BS:
Jameson on the rocks!

T:
3 music festival musts:
BS:
big dressing room, air-conditioning and designated driver.

T:
favorite rock star moment of your life
BS:
Playing on Saturday Night Live and hanging out with Chris Farley.  What a riot.
Also, taking a helicopter into Woodstock 95' , flying over the people and then rocking out in front of 300K people was not too shabby.

T:
when you and your wife got married what was the song that played for the first dance
BS:
"I believe in Miracles"  - hot chocolate

T:
what are you listening to at the moment
BS:
at the moment?.... Frankie singing the chorus to Adele's song "Rolling in the deep"... over and over and over and...

T:
most treasured possession
BS:
My Big Mama's iron skillet,   I've had it since I left Mississippi in 89'

T:
sugar or spice
BS:
spice, Its so much more unpredictable.

T:
what keeps you up at night
BS:
not much...I use to let things bother me about life, money, politics.... but It seemed I did not make a difference in those areas by worrying, so I gave it up.   Now, I just put my best foot forward

T:
most looking forward to in 2012
BS:
Playing out with my project Abandon Jalopy.

T:
song you work-out to
BS:
I dont really work out...I play tennis!

T:
Last question, What is Abandon Jalopy?
BS:
Abandon Jalopy...to me, it means dreams that could be.

  3. From what I've seen of Brad, in Blind Melon and AJ, is that he is humble and truthful, with both feet on the ground. He is the only rock star that I know of who has created a forum to directly relate to his fans. For this I thank you Brad. Stay real.

  4. I've known Brad and Kim for a long time and they are the cream of the crop!
Frankie is the best parts of both of them with her own unique brand of sass and humor, I only wish they hadn't left Seattle- we all miss them so!
